Few expected much from the United States when the hosts were drawn in the same group as arguably one of the best teams in the world, but a fortuitous own goal and tireless work ethic helped them to defy their critics with one of the biggest upsets of USA ’94.
Both Colombia and the USMNT entered their second Group A match in need of a result, following a loss to Bulgaria and draw with Switzerland respectively. And with Los Cafeteros considered one of the favorites to hoist the title, it seemed quite likely that they would leave Standford Stadium with a crucial three points. But the underdog hosts wore down Colombia with seemingly endless counter-attacks, forcing a fateful own goal from Andrés Escobar in the first half and an Earnie Stewart follow up finish in the second half that was enough to help the Americans pick up a historic win.
Both sides of this design pay homage to the iconic kits worn by the Red, White, and Blue during that World Cup. The match itself is displayed over a wavy red background that is reminiscent of the team’s lesser-known home strip, while the reverse was inspired by their famous faux-denim blues.
