Description
Match Date: November 21, 2010
Competition: MLS Cup Final
Location: BMO Field
Match Story:
As one of the original sides in the American top flight, it would be easy to assume their trophy cabinet displays a rich history of success. But surprisingly, Kroenke’s Colorado club has only one major piece of silverware on display. The 2010 edition of the Burgundy and Blue struggled for consistency during the regular season, so it seemed unlikely this would be the season to earn a trophy. But they found their stride heading into the playoffs. They would knock off Columbus in the first round before defeating San Jose for the — yes! — the Eastern Conference Championship, earning them a shot at glory against cup final debutants Dallas. Though they’d concede the first goal in the 35th minute, Colorado would pull level in the second half through star striker Conor Casey. Extra time would follow, where an own-goal from Dallas’ George John would gift them them that all-important trophy.
Design Story:
The match side features a design inspired by the canopy of Colorado’s home stadium, which itself is meant to emulate the peaks of the Rocky Mountains that serve as its backdrop. The reverse design is a burgundy and sky blue variant of the Colorado state flag.
