MATCH STORY

Despite having one of the oldest national teams in South America, the wait for international success for Chile was a long one. La Roja didn’t lift their first major silverware until 2015, where — as hosts — they were able to hold off rivals Argentina to win their first Copa América title. A year later, playing in the Centenario edition of the tournament in the United States, Chile would again face their neighbors for a chance to defend their title. The rematch would be a rough and tumble affair, with a red card shown to each side in the first half and a further eight yellows split between them. And again, just as it had the year before, it would take penalties to decide the winner. Messi’s miss on the first was canceled out by Vidal’s own failure to convert, but the Chileans converted their next four and Argentina missed another to help La Roja repeat as South American champions.

DESIGN STORY

The match side of the wristband takes its cues from the red and blue strip worn by the side that’s based on the national flag and also features various geometric symbols of the endemic Mapuche culture. The reverse depicts another Mapuche insigne that translates to “Andean” and is frequently used in traditional woven fabrics from the country.
