MATCH STORY

Back in 1999, it wasn’t as if the U.S. women’s national team weren’t already the badest girls around — they were. World Cup champions in 1991, semifinalists in ’95, and Olympic gold medalists in 1996, they were favorites to hoist the World Cup as hosts. The squad was stacked full of legends — Mia Hamm, Michelle Akers, July Foudy, Carla Overbeck, and the list goes on. But standing in their way of lifting a second World Cup was a Chinese side considered to be the most likely to knock them from their perch. A scoreless 120 minutes of action at the Rose Bowl would ensue, neither side able to crack the other’s resolute defense. In penalties, both sides would convert their first two kicks. But China’s third taker — Liu Yang — saw her effort shunned by American keeper Brianna Scurry. That set up Brandi Chastain to convert the fifth and decisive penalty for the US, then drop to her knees to give us one of the most iconic American sports images of all time.

DESIGN STORY

The match side of the wristband is a blue and red pattern inspired by the razzle-dazzle camouflage used by the U.S. Navy during World War I. The reverse features a repeating star pattern with golden stars representing the legacy of the “99ers” that lives on in the current crop of American players.
