Description
Match Date: September 27, 2014
Competition: USL Championship Playoffs Final
Location: Bonney Field
Match Story:
Few clubs have burst onto the American soccer scene like Sacramento. Launched in 2014 and coached by enigmatic former American attacker Preki, the California Capital City Club found success on the pitch and in the stands. Sellout after sellout spurred the team on to clinch the second seed in the USLPRO playoffs, where they would eventually host Harrisburg in the final. After seeing Justin Braun nearly open the scoring in the second minute, Octavio Guzman gave the home crowd the lead they desired in the 36th minute. A nervy second half saw Harrisburg push for an equalizer — including a denied 89th minute penalty shout. But the hosts finished the game off when Thomas Stewart added an insurance goal in injury time, giving Sacramento the first trophy in their very first season.
Design Story:
The match side features the same bear that adorns the California state flag and Sacramento’s crest. On the reverse is a sashed maroon design, reminiscent of many of the club’s home kits over the years.
