MATCH STORY
Considering the country’s population of just 3.5 million, Uruguay have long overperformed on the international stage. And with world-class players like Luis Suárez, Edison Cavani, and Diego GodÃn currently in their squad, it’s hard to imagine a time when they could have been better. But once upon a time, La Celeste were one of the first kings of world football. Heading into hosting the first-ever World Cup in 1930, Uruguay were the two-time defending world champions having won the 1928 and 1924 Olympic gold medals. And they picked up where they left off in FIFA’s first marquee event, winning their group and blowing out Yugoslavia 6-1 in the semifinals. The final would see them square up against their fierce rivals and neighbors, Argentina. Despite finding themselves down 2-1 at the interval, they scored three unanswered in the second half to be crowned World Cup champions.
DESIGN STORY
The match side of the design is inspired by the official Uruguayan football crest and its familiar golden laurels. The reverse features a melding of La Celeste‘s sky blue and black kits and the country’s striped national flag.
