MATCH STORY

As a country with two World Cup trophies in their cabinet, it would have been easy to choose one of those finals for the match on our Argentina design. But in reality, the 1986 World Cup 2-1 quarterfinal win against England was the only logical choice. Already a legend in his day, Diego Maradona scored not just the most iconic goal of all time in the match — a slaloming, 60-yard dash through the England defense that left five of the Three Lions’ defense in his wake before slipping into the net. He also scored the second most famous goal ever just four minutes before that. Timing an aerial challenge against England goalkeeper Peter Shilton perfectly, Maradona punched the ball with his left hand and in it went. Somehow, referee Ali Bin Nasser and his crew did not see the infraction. When asked about it after the match, Diego described the goal as “un poco con la cabeza de Maradona y otro poco con la mano de Dios”.

DESIGN STORY

The match side of the design takes its design cues from “Sun of May” found on the Argentine flag. The reverse features the traditional sky-blue and white stripes that gaveĀ la AlbicelesteĀ their name.
