Description
Match Date: May 30, 2021
Competition: Torneo Guardianes Final
Location: Estadio Corona
Match Story:
The club earned the nickname “La Máquina” for their machine-like dominance of the Mexican top-flight in the 1970’s. But after winning the winter title in 1997, Los Cementeros famously went over 20 years before they’d win their next — unthinkable for one of the biggest clubs in the country. But the wait would finally come to an end with an utterly dominant Clausura campaign in 2021. They’d finish top of the table by dropping only 4 points in their final 15 matches. And despite dropping their opening match in the playoffs, they grind their way to a final against Santos Laguna. They kicked things off by pipping a 1-0 win on the road at the Estadio Corona. But it was the Laguneros who would strike first back home at Estadio Azteca. But just six minutes from halftime, La Máquina finally clinched their sixth ninth league title with a goal from Cabecita to secure the 2-1 aggregate win.
Design Story:
The match side takes a blocky interpretation of the club’s brand based on a series of kits worn in the 90’s. On the reverse, a repeating pattern paying homage to the club’s geometric crest.
