Without a doubt, 2021 will go down as a banner year for the U.S. men’s national team. A schedule packed with the Nations League, Gold Cup, and World Cup qualifying matches helped the Yanks to face off against bitter rivals Mexico on three separate occasions. But after collecting two trophies with wins in the first two meetings, a third win in a crucial qualifier in Cincinnati seemed against the odds. And while a packed-house was delivered a cagey first half that ended level at 0-0, things got wild in the second. A 74th-minute header off the bench from injury-doubt Christian Pulisic put the hosts in the driver seat and silenced the traveling support. Then five minutes from full time, a fortuitous bounce put Weston McKinnie through to give the Americans their favored 2-0 scoereline over El Trí.
The match side of the wristband features a depiction of the exterior of the glittering new ground in Cincinnati that played host to the match. The reverse features a repeating “Dos a Cero” and “Man in the Mirror” — a homage to the reply Pulisic inscribed on his shirt for Mexican keeper Guillermo Ochoa’s pre-match taunts — over a bed of stars.
