Description

Match Date: February 27, 2000
Competition: 2000 Concacaf Gold Cup Final
Location: Memorial Coliseum

Match Story:
Much like their neighbors to the south, soccer has never really been Canada’s first sport. But as is also the case for their neighbors, the sport’s popularity and quality has skyrocketed in the last two decades. And the first spark of Canada’s recent rise appeared in the Gold Cup in 2000, in the midst of a period where the USA and Mexico seemed to be trading off dominance of North American soccer. The Canucks kicked off the tournament by topping Group A, only to be rewarded with a quarterfinal draw against current holders Mexico which they won 2-1. In the semis, they would knock back Trinidad & Tobago 1-0 earning them a final against tournament invitees Colombia. A scoreless first half appeared to be on the cards before Jason De Vos scored just before the halftime whistle. And a second half penalty from Oldham Athletic striker Carlo Corazzin gave Canada the first ever Gold Cup title, making them the first and only other side besides Mexico or the U.S. to win the tournament.

Design Story:
The match side of the wristband takes its inspiration from recent black away kits, and features a script “Canada” that featured on the shirts in the 80’s. The reverse features a pattern composed of the most iconic of all Canadian icons: the red maple leaf.
