Represent D.C. while remembering their historic first league title.

MATCH STORY

United were inarguably the first dynasty of the fledgling American first division and they kicked off that in spectacular fashion. Though they began their inaugural season with three straight losses, the side powered by stars such as John Harkes, Marco Etcheverry, Jaime Moreno, and Raúl Díaz Arce found their stride and cruised to the second-best record in the league. In the first round of the playoffs, they rallied after losing the first match against the MetroStars to win the three-match series 2-1. In the semifinals, they twice downed the Supporter Shield winners Tampa Bay to earn a birth in the first-ever league championship match. But a rough start in equally rough conditions found D.C. down 0-2 to Los Angeles. Legendary boss Bruce Arena then made two key changes in the second half that changed the course of the match. Tony Sanneh’s introduction paid dividends when he pulled one back in the 72nd minute with a header from an Etcheverry cross. Then in the 81st, Jorge Campos spilled an Etcheverry shot to United sub Shawn Medved who leveled the score. Etcheverry again proved crucial in sudden death injury time, serving in the corner that Eddie Pope eventually finished to hand D.C. the title.

DESIGN STORY

The wristband’s match side features a take on the Lincoln Memorial that features the infamous RFK raccoon seated at Lincoln’s chair. The reverse is inspired by the flag of the District of Columbia layered atop black and red smoke released by the supporters groups that call The Nest home on matchday.
