Competition: UEFA European Cup Final
Location: De Kuip
Match Story:
Hailing from England’s “Second City”, the Villains’ recent rise in England’s top flight has been phenomenal. But for many supporters, it’s also an echo of the club’s glory years of the early 80’s. Having won the Football League title in the ’80-81 season, Villa found themselves in the European Cup the following campaign. And after defeating the Icelandic, East German, Soviet, and Belgian champions, they then found themselves in a final against giants Bayern Munich. Things got off to a difficult start for the English champions, with their starting goalkeeper forced off after 10 minutes. But Nigel Spink came off the bench and repeatedly kept the mighty Germans at bay, allowing Peter Withe to score the most famous goal in Villa history and give the Birmingham-based club their first European title.
Design Story:
The match side of the wristband is inspired by the Villains’ iconic triangle-laden home kit from 1990-92. On the reverse, a checkered design that takes its inspiration from their kits in the early 2000’s.
