Description
Match Date: May 22, 2011
Competition: Liguilla Clausura Final
Location: Estadio OlÃmpico Universitario
Match Story:
Birthed from a group of amateur players from the National University, the Auriazules are one of the most successful sides in Mexican fútbol history. And their last major title came back in 2011 during the Mexican Clausura. A second place finish during the frist phase set the table for an epic run in the playoffs. There, they’d sneak by Monterrey due to seeding, dispatch 8th-seeded Chivas in the semifinals, and face Morelia in the finals. A draw away in the first leg was a huge result, but the Universitarios would do one better back at home. A 14th-minute goal from Palencia and a Javier Cortés 77th-minute strike were enough to see off their challengers and give them their seventh Primera division title.
