MATCH STORY
The rivalry between the U.S. and the Mexico is intense no matter the setting, but the stakes had never been higher than when the two national teams squared off in the knockout round of the 2002 World Cup in South Korea. And though the Americans had done well to escape a group containing Portugal, co-hosts South Korea, and a difficult Polish side, they were still underdogs to an El Trà that topped a Group H containing Italy, Croatia, and Ecuador. But it was the Yanks who showed the early initiative, with Brian McBride opening the scoring in the 8th minute. Then breakout star Landon Donovan added a second in the 65th-minute, giving the U.S. their first birth in the quarterfinals since the inaugural tournament in 1930.
DESIGN STORY
The match side of the wristband takes its inspiration from the simplistic kits donned by the Yanks in South Korea and Japan. The reverse features a design inspired by an interior, pitch-level view of the stadium where this historic Dos a Cero took place — Jeonju World Cup Stadium.
