MATCH STORY

Though Ukraine has only been an independent country in its current form since 1991, the country still has a rich footballing tradition. But they didn’t get a chance to shine on the international stage until the 2012 edition of the European Championships when they co-hosted the tournament with Poland. All Ukrainian eyes were on “The Team” when they finally took to the pitch against Sweden in their capital city of Kyiv. But the hopes of the yellow and blue clad stadium were dashed in the 52nd minute when the dazzling Zlatan Ibrahimović managed to poke home an opener. Ukraine swiftly responded. Just three minutes after Zlatan’s opener, their own leading star — the great Andriy Shevchenko — leveled the score. And another seven minutes later, their famous #7 doubled his tally to give the hosts’ the lead and ultimately a historic win.

DESIGN STORY

The match side takes its inspiration from the traditional Ukrainian yellow kit worn during the 2012 Euros. A vyshyvanka-like background sits behind goals marked by the famous #7 who scored them. The reverse depicts a design meant to invoke Ukraine’s flag and features a repeating pattern of the national symbol, the tryzub.
