Description

Match Date: May 24, 2014
Competition: UEFA Champions League Final
Location: Estádio da Luz

Match Story:
After growing their collection of European crowns from six to nine during a five-year stretch ending in 2002, it was the expectation that it wouldn’t long until Madrid hoisted a tenth title. But for a club used to success on the continental stage, a frustrating 12 years would follow before they would reach their next final. Upon finally doing so again in May of 2014, waiting for them was a familiar foe… crosstown rivals and current Spanish champions, Atletí. The match itself seemed it’s own eternity. Los Colchoneros struck first through centerback Diego Godín 36th minute. And they would hold that lead all the way until the 93rd minute when Sergio Ramos leveled the score for Los Blancos. But once they found themselves in extra time, Real remembered their pedigree. A flurry of three goals came via Bale, Marcelo, and Ronaldo. Atletí had now answer. Madrid’s reward? La décima.

Design Story:
The match side features a design inspired by the Rojigualda flag, oft waved in the stands at the Bernabéu, and featuring an inlaid roman numeral 10 pattern. The reverse, showing ripples emanating from a series of crowns, is meant to emulate Madrid’s impact on the beautiful game.
